Chances are you have a young person in your life that reads or makes comics. Graphic novels aren’t just for kids, though. What It Is by associate professor Lynda Barry is a guide for adults who want to tell their story through comic book art.
Instead of a traditional expository book, What It Is simply gives us the comic book version of Barry’s life story. For instance, Barry reveals the monsters she was most afraid of as a child.
What It Is is a collection of revelations, doodles, anecdotes, and thought exercises. Some of the pages offer advice about writing e.g. “Anatomy of a Writing Session.” Other pages tell her story with illustrations, collage and scrapbooking techniques.
